How to Prepare for Your First Dispensary Visit

Visiting a dispensary for the first time is a thrill, but a lot of people new to cannabis are unsure about what to expect on their first visit. Here’s how to prepare for your first dispensary visit and to get the most out of your trip.😉

Get In Tune with Your Body & Set an Intention

Before visiting Mission Cannabis, be sure to ask yourself a couple of simple questions to get in tune with your body and set an intention for your visit.  Is your body sore or do you have achy muscles? Do you struggle with daily stress or anxiety? Are you having trouble sleeping or do you need an extra boost of energy?

By questioning your current state and understanding how you feel, you can begin to explore cannabis and CBD products to help ease some lingering pain and discomfort. Cannabis can help you care for your body and mind, so do a quick body scan before visiting our dispensary to get the most out of your visit.

Be Aware of THC Potency

Cannabis contains THCA, which is a non-intoxicating compound that is converted into THC through decarboxylation: in the presence of heat energy applied by the consumer – like a lighter or vaporizer. THC is the chemical compound that causes the signature euphoric high we all know and love.

The average strain of cannabis grown under good conditions has THC levels between 15-17%, but cannabis products come in many THC concentrations. Most edibles come in 2.5mg, 5mg, and 10 mg servings, and concentrates and extracts typically start at 30-40% THC and climb higher from there.

For first-timers, we suggest trying low-THC edibles (1 – 5mg), and starting low and going slow. Edibles usually take between 30 – 90 minutes to really kick in, and you’ll feel the peak high around the 120-minute mark, so be sure to not take more than one dose on your first go. If you prefer smoking, try a pack of pre-rolls that have a THC potency of around 15-17% and you can find THC/CBD balanced cannabis for an even more mellow experience.

It’s important to note that there’s no perfect measurement for cannabis, the strength largely depends upon your body and your experience. If you’re unsure about a product, its strength and its potential effects, just ask one of our friendly budtenders for some assistance and they’ll be happy to help guide you to products that are right for you.

Understand the Different Ingestion Methods

Cannabis can be ingested in various forms; It is important to note that each ingestion method takes a different length of time for the cannabinoids to reach the bloodstream and nervous system = not all highs are created equal.

Smoking is the quickest to take effect and the high begins almost immediately. Alternately, edibles can take between 30 – 90 minutes until you feel them, depending upon the THC concentration, the amount you eat, and the time of day (ie is your stomach full or empty).

Know Public Consumption Laws

While cannabis is completely legal in California, you can’t just spark up a joint in your favorite park or while walking down the street. Before visiting Mission Cannabis, it’s important that you understand public consumption laws so you know where you can – and can’t – enjoy cannabis.

For example, did you know that an individual may possess 28.5 grams of cannabis plant material and 8 grams of concentrated cannabis at one time?

It is illegal to consume cannabis in locations where smoking is illegal, including bars, restaurants, buildings open to the public, places of employment and areas within 15 feet of doors and ventilation openings.

You cannot consume or possess cannabis on federal lands such as national parks – even if the park is in California!

You can consume cannabis on private property, but property owners and landlords may ban the use and possession of cannabis on their properties.

Call Ahead to Gather More Information

If you’ve never visited a dispensary before, it can be really helpful to call ahead and ask for helpful information, like the types of products that are available, and if they have any recommendations for people new to cannabis.

Before visiting Mission Cannabis Club (FKA Shambhala), give us a call to talk to one of our in-house staff members. Our team of budtenders are the leading cannabis experts in San Francisco, and we are happy to answer and questions about cannabis that you may have. Together, we can help find the right products for you so that you can enjoy cannabis more thoroughly, and safely.
